Birth Mothers

If you are a birth mother and are considering adoption here is some helpful information.

Understanding Adoption

Birth Mothers consider adoption for many different reasons and only you can decide if it is your best choice. Birth mothers can make an adoption plan at any point during their pregnancy, at delivery in the hospital, or at any time thereafter for their child. Adoption is done through the legal system and gives parental rights to an adoptive family.

Your Choices as a birth mother

Adoption is your choice. As a birth mother you choose your adoption plan and who you work with. You can select your adoptive family and what type of relationship you want with them.
You can choose if you want an Open Adoption, Semi-Open Adoption or Closed Adoption.
  • Open Adoption which may involve future visits, phone calls, letters, or updates.
  • Semi-Open Adoption in which most communication is done with support from a 3rd party such as an adoption agency or on-line using Child Connect for pictures, letters, and updates.
  • Closed Adoption – No contact or information is shared after placement.

Support

Adoption is free for birth parents and in most states, you may be able to receive financial assistance for pregnancy related expenses such as housing, food, and medical care. Birth mothers can also receive lifetime adoption related counseling. Your adoption professional can explain your choices and help you make the decision that is best for you.
